The Soapbox

Bryan's thoughts of the moment, day, week, month, year, decade, century!

(for the environmentally inclined)

What the heck. This is my soapbox page where I discourse on whatever I'm thinking about. For the moment, or for the century.

If you must know this is what I acutally use in my washing machine.

Thought for the moment:
Someday I will get a "Stupid Software Page" up and running. Some people will NOT be pleased!

People who want to live by some of the laws of Leviticus should live by them all.

Dolly the cloned sheep Human cloning

What I have started... I'll let you read the work in progress. Be kind!

Cloning

Cloning has become a hot issue now that a sheep has been cloned. Sure, other animals have been cloned before, but they were creatres very different from ourselves, Homo Sapiens. But a ship, being a warm-blooded mammal, strikes much close to home, the only thing that could get closer to humans would be cloning a primate.

I know others will disagree with me, but in my mind if we can clone sheep, we can clone humans. The dividing line between humans and other animals is an extremely fine line. Philosophies aside, that sheep could have been a human. Maybe certain procedures would need to change due to things like differences in size of the ova that is being used, and maybe some modification of the chemical treatment given the donor ova to rid it of the original DNA, but not much I'm sure. We already do in vitro fertilization already with humans, so that part is pretty much good to go.

Stuff in here about how much DNA is shared in all living things

Wrap up on human and animal differences.

Why I am against or for it, and arguments thereof.

SETI: The Search for Extraterrestial Intelligence, a futile search? I close my eyes and think of what new technology will be like in the (many) years ahead, and I make my case that SETI may have even worse odds of finding something out there than we can currently imagine.

I believe in free speech. I may not like what I hear sometimes, but I feel that people have a right to express themselves. The current sentiment from a supposed conservative Congress that lays what even they think is probably unconstitutional is unconscionable. Please follow the link and do what you can do. If you are from outside the United States, please do make sure that this doesn't happen in your country.

The fight is not over yet!

"The State insists that, by thus quarantining the general reading public against books not too rugged for grown men and women, in order to shield juvenile innocence, it is exercising its power to promote the general welfare. Surely this is to burn the house to roast the pig... The incidence of this enactment is to reduce the adult population of Michigan to reading only what is fit for children." - U.S. Supreme Court Justice Felix Frankfurter, Butler V. Michigan (1957) 352 U.S. 380, 383 (1957)

More of my opinion about the CDA!
